Medical Team
Northern Indiana Neurological Institute, P.C., offers the services of nine neurologists as well as two physiatrists (physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist), an internist (internal medicine specialist), and a nurse practitioner. While we treat most neurological conditions, some of our areas of expertise include rehabilitation, immunology, oncology, women's neurology, Parkinson's disease, and stroke. Below is information about the education and credentials of our physicians and nurse.
Lonnie L. Amico, M.D.
Dr. Lonnie Amico received his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School. He completed his internship at Northwestern University and went on to complete his neurology residency and neuroimmunology fellowship at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. He is certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), in neurosonology by the American Society of Neuroimaging, and is also certified by the American Society of Clinical Neurophysiology. Dr. Amico has special interest in the treatment of stroke. Dr. Amico maintains memberships in numerous professional societies including the American Academy of Neurology, the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association, and the American Society of Neuroimaging.
Richard L. Cristea, M.D.
Dr. Cristea received his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, Illinois. He served his internal medicine internship and residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center and his neurology residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. He is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) with added qualification in clinical neurophysiology. He has received additional board certifications from the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the American Society of Neurorehabilitation. Dr. Cristea is the director of electromyography at Northern Indiana Neurological Institute. He belongs to many professional societies including the American Academy of Neurology, the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association, the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, the American Society of Neurorehabilitation, and the National Headache Foundation. Dr. Cristea is dedicated to advancing the field of neurology by publishing articles in his field and presenting research at international neurological meetings.
Jennifer Pallone, D.O.
Dr. Pallone received her degree in osteopathic medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. She completed her internship at the Normandy Osteopathic Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, and residencies at the Chicago Osteopathic Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Pallone is certified in neurology by the American Osteopathic Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Dr. Pallone has special interest in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. Dr. Pallone is a member of many professional societies including the American Osteopathic Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the American College of Neuropsychiatry, and the Movement Disorders Society.
Larry Salberg, M.D.
Dr. Salberg is medical director of the Northern Indiana Neurological Institute. Dr. Salberg received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He completed his internal medicine residency at Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago and his neurology residency also at the Indiana University School of Medicine where he was chief resident in his final year. He is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) with added qualification in clinical neurophysiology. He has also earned board certifications from the American Board of Electroencephalography, the American Society of Neurorehabilitation, and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Salberg is dedicated to advancing the field of neurology by publishing articles and presenting research at professional meetings. Dr. Salberg specializes in women's neurology and currently serves as assistant professor of clinical neurology at Indiana School of Medicine. Dr. Salberg maintains memberships in several neurological societies including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Society of Neurorehabilitation, the National Headache Foundation, the National Stroke Council, and the American Sleep Disorders Association.
Mark A. Simaga, M.D.
Dr. Simaga graduated with his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois and went on to complete his residencies in Internal Medicine and Neurology at the McNeal Hospital and Rush-Presbyterian -St. Luke's Medical Center in Berwyn, Illinois. Dr. Simaga also completed his post-graduate fellowship training in neuro-oncology at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (board-certified) and maintains affiliations with a number of professional societies including the American Academy of Neurology.
Emilio D. Soria, M.D.
Dr. Emilio Soria earned his medical degree at the Medical School of the University of Salamanca, Spain. He served his residency in neurosurgery at the Hospital Ciudad Sanitaria de la Seguridad Social, Barcelona, Spain. He then trained as a resident in neurology at SUNY at Buffalo, New York, where he also pursued specialized training as a fellow in electromyography. Dr. Soria is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with certification in adult neurology, and with added qualification in clinical neurophysiology. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, with certification in EMG; a diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology, with certification in EEG; and a diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Soria is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, a fellow of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, and a member of the American Sleep Disorder Association.
Michelle A. Roda, D.O.
Dr. Michelle Ann Roda received her medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. She completed her internship and neurology residency at Garden City Oseteopathic Hospital in Garden City, Michigan, where she became Chief Resident in 1993. She is certified by the American Osteopathic Boards of Neurology and Psychiatry. Dr. Roda maintains memberships in numerous professional societies including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Osteopathic Association, and the American College of Neuropsychiatrists.
Neurologist Dr. Teodori completed his Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Loyola University of Chicago and worked as a Mental Health Technician at Little Company of Mary Hospital from 1994 to 1995. He later attained the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999. He completed residencies in psychiatry and neurology at Allegheny General Hospital and St. John Oakland General Hospital, respectively. Dr. Teodori came to NINIPC in 2007 from a neurology practice in Valparaiso, Indiana, where he was an attending neurologist.
Neurologist Dr. Hanlon attended the I.J. Goldberg School of Nursing at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago before completing her bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She went on to receive her Doctor of Medicine from University of Illinois Medical School. She completed internships in general medicine at Weiss Memorial Hospital, and in neurology at University of Illinois Hospital. She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, and licensed to practice in both Illinois and Indiana. Dr. Hanlon has worked as a research assistant at University of Chicago Hospital, and was Chief Neurological Resident at University of Illinois Hospital. She taught at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she was an assistant professor of neurology. She has been in private practice since 1980. She is the author of numerous professional publications, and is an affiliate of the American Academy of Neurology.
Stephen S. Karol, M.D.
Dr. Karol is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and is a member of the American Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He earned his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He served an internship at West Suburban Hospital Medical Center in Oak Park, Illinois, followed by a residency at Schwab Rehabilitation and Care Network in Chicago, Illinois.
Michael A. Owens, M.D.
Dr. Owens received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his internship at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana and his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Boston University Medical Center/The University Hospital in Massachusetts. Dr. Owens is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He maintains affiliations in a number of professional organizations including the American Medical Association and the Indiana State Medical Society. He is also the medical director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services at St. Anthony Medical Center.
Chirag Patel, M.D.
Dr. Patel completed his medical training at the University of Missouri at Kansas City's School of Medicine, where he received a number of academic and medical honors. He worked as Research Coordinator for Rush-Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center in the Center for Clinical Studies before entering his residency at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Patel is on staff at Munster Community Hospital in Munster, St. Mary Hospital in Hobart, and St. Anthony Hospital in Crown Point. Dr. Patel is a member of the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Association, and the Chicago Medical Society. He is licensed in both Illinois and Indiana.
Kristine Starcevich, N.P.
Ms. Starcevich is an adult nurse practitioner who is highly experienced in the care of patients with head injuries, stroke, and other central nervous system debilitations. She is responsible for the education of patients regarding their medications, testing, etc. and serves as a liaison between patient and physician. Her areas of special focus include the stroke clinic, multiple sclerosis clinic, movement disorders, and dementia/Alzheimer's disease. She is also involved in clinical studies as study coordinator. Ms. Starcevich earned her master of science degree with a major in nursing in clinical nurse specialist tract from Purdue University Calumet. She also earned a post master's certificate in the adult nurse practitioner tract from Indiana University. Earlier, she earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Indiana University Northwest.
